High intensity physical exercise increases energy demand. To produce this ‘extra’ energy the body increases its metabolic rate, in other words, the number of biochemical reactions that take place in cells. An indirect consequence of this is the increase in the concentration of products that increase the cellular acidity, also known as cellular metabolic acidity.

Additionally, in order to be able to produce all that extra energy, cells also have to resort to using so-called anaerobic metabolism. This produces an enormous amount of energy per unit of time.
