Rehydration should begin as soon as the physical exercise is over, especially in high-intensity interval sports which exceed 60 minutes in length and in temperatures above 25º. The main aim is to immediately restore the cardiovascular, muscular and metabolic physiological responses by correcting the loss of fluid and solutes accumulated during the course of the exercise. It is recommended to take in at least 150% of the weight loss in the first six hours after exercise to replace the fluid lost through either sweat or urine. This leads to recovering water balance.

Recommendations by the European Scientific Committee on Food, and the Spanish Federation of Sports Medicine regarding the osmolality and concentration of sodium in hydro-electrolyte replacement drinks:

  • Osmolality between 200-300 mOsm/kg of water.
